When I started my business, I never would have dreamt that I would be on a national cake show, let alone Food Network! I’ve been watching cake shows long before I ever considered leaving my cushy office job and running away to culinary school.
I’ll never forget that coffee date in late January with my friend Libby, who owns The London Baker. Her sideways glances, innocent questions like “Have you ever considered competing on a cake show?” and finally coming to the point of “So… what are you doing in March?” Turns out she had submitted an audition video to Sugar Productions, who produce the show for Food Network. They loved her video and had recently called to ask her on the show. She wanted me to be her assistant!
We would soon discover that the experience is both unnerving and exhilarating. We were given the date we would be competing, and from then on worked tirelessly testing recipes, designing cakes and practicing various elements so we could time our work. Countless hours and sleepless nights went into the preparation for what we may or may not encounter on the show. We had no idea what to expect, but wanted to be ready for anything. 20 weeks along in a high risk pregnancy by the time we flew to LA, I was beyond exhausted from the events before the actual filming even began, but could not WAIT to get on set!
Being on set of a show that you know so well is surreal. Meeting the judges – Ron Ben Israel (world renowned Master Pastry Chef) in the flesh… I can’t even tell you. Let’s just say a few fan tears were shed (I blame pregnancy hormones) the first time he walked by! He was SO kind throughout the competition day, even when the cameras weren’t rolling. Also, the host Jonathan Bennett (aka Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls) was SO fetch 🙂
Thankfully, we made it to the end without too many mishaps, although I think we both wanted to pass out several times throughout the process. In the end, we did well. Not first place, but a dignified second. A bit of a bummer after all we had battled through. But we lost to very worthy competitors, and have made lasting friends in the process. I loved every moment, what an incredible experience.
Big thank you to Libby for asking me to join her on this crazy adventure, and thanks to all of you for for always encouraging me in this silly but wonderfully sweet career <3
Have a sweet day! ~ Thea
